Understanding Keyword Density
What Is Keyword Density?
Keyword density describes how frequently a particular keyword or phrase appears in a piece of content compared with the total number of words. It can be useful as a diagnostic metric when reviewing content for repetition and keyword usage.
How Is Keyword Density Calculated?
Keyword density is generally calculated by dividing the number of times a keyword appears by the total number of words and multiplying the result by 100. For example, if a keyword appears 10 times in a 1,000-word article, its basic density is 1%.
What Is a Good Keyword Density?
There is no universal keyword-density percentage that guarantees better rankings. Search engines evaluate content using many signals, so density should be treated as a diagnostic metric rather than a target that must be reached.
What Is Keyword Stuffing?
Keyword stuffing is the excessive or unnatural use of keywords in content. Repeating a phrase simply to increase its frequency can make content difficult to read and less useful to visitors.
How to Improve Keyword Usage
Write naturally for your readers first. Use important terms where they genuinely help explain the topic, cover related concepts, answer relevant questions, and avoid unnecessary repetition.
